HMS Perth, Hobart, Sydney

The Australian light cruisers

These three buildings (Perth, Hobart, Sydney) were built specifically for the Australian Navy. They were largely inspired by the Leander, but were distinguished by their two fireplaces reflecting an arrangement of different boilers. The armament was also the same and they boarded a seaplane. The DCA was modified in 1939: the Hobart and Perth will receive four more modern double turrets.

Career

Their career was very active. In the Indian Ocean first, stalking the German raiders. It was during such a meeting that the Sydney unmasked and confronted the Kormoran, certainly the most powerful of these corsair cargo ships. The fight began with a torpedo fire from the German, who hit the front turrets. The Sydney stopped with its rear turrets, still at close range. Gravely hit by the 150-mm German shells, he retaliated and sent the freighter by the bottom. But burning atrociously, he sank some time later. The Perth will be sunk in March 1942 during the battle of Sunda Strait, with the remains of the ABDA force, by shells of the Japanese cruisers. The Hobart nearly died on his side of a torpedo in July 1943, which earned him 17 months of immobilization. But he survived and continued to serve until 1962.
